About The Department
Welcome To SNT
Introduction
In the landlocked mountainous state of Sikkim, road connectivity is the lifeline that links it with the rest of the country. Given the challenging terrain and the critical nature of this connectivity, the role of the Transport Department is pivotal. The department must uphold the highest standards of responsibility and dedication to ensure that Sikkim remains accessible and connected. Beyond merely facilitating transportation, the department is also tasked with maintaining regularity and reliability in its operations. This involves a high level of organizational effort and dedication to provide efficient public transport services to the people of Sikkim.
History of Sikkim's Transport System
The history of vehicular transportation in Sikkim dates back to 1944 with the introduction of the Sikkim State Transport (SST). This was a significant milestone for the state, marking the beginning of organized transportation services. In 1955, the system underwent a rebranding and became known as the Sikkim Nationalized Transport Department (SNT). Unlike other states in India where transport sectors are managed by road transportation corporations, in Sikkim, the transport sector is directly overseen by a government department. This unique arrangement underscores the
importance of transport services in the state's overall infrastructure and governance.
